Happy Pride!

28 Jun

It’s been an historic week here in the US. With DOMA and Proposition 8 both being repealed, there’s lots for the LGBT community, and society in general, to celebrate.

LNewucyPride2BSo get out there and have a great celebration this weekend, whether you’re in New York City, or elsewhere. Show each other that, regardless of any differences, we are and should be all equal under the law!

Remember: discrimination is the pits!

3 Years!

20 Jun

Today marks 3 years since I adopted Lucy.

I always tell people that adopting a dog is the second best decision I have ever made. They ask: “What’s the first?” And I explain that it is getting my own apartment so that I could adopt a dog! Lucy has made my day-to-day life better in so many ways, but most importantly, that through the redundancy and stress of it all, I can come home to her everyday and just have fun tossing a ball around. Life becomes simple because all it is really is “a boy and his dog.”

What’s In My BarkBox?

23 May

May’s BarkBox is “a celebration of all the things we love about being outside.” With lots of thing to chew on, each product represents a different activity we can do to enjoy the springtime. Firstly, BarkBox has a new look! Check it out:

BarkBox's New Look

BarkBox’s New Look

Instead of the shreds of blue paper that used to come inside our BarkBox, we now have the classy, branded paper wrapping our goodies! So fancy! Take a closer look:

BarkBox's New Paper Wrapping

It’s lovely, I just wish it didn’t have some of the words that typically have a negative connotation, like growl, yap and guard. Along with the new packaging also comes a new little tip card, with a cute little cartoon:

On the back, it reads, “Our dogs love their goodies, but their favorite thing in the world is to spend time with their humans. A great spring activity is to simply take out the leash and go exploring to a new park or neighborhood.” We completely agree! Get out there with your pup and explore! Now to the good stuff…

First up, from Planet Dog, we got an Orbee-Tuff ball! These durable toys are great for fetch, as well as just keeping your dog entertained on its own for a while. Best of all, they’re minty-fresh so they help cover up the sometimes unpleasant odors that come from your pup’s mouth!

Next up, we got a pig femur bone from Barkworthies! The best kind of distraction for a pup when you need to get some work done around the house, this will keep your dog busy for quite a long time!

To represent the joy of a spring/summer time BBQ, we got Loving Pets’ Grill-icious Beef Treats! Made with sweet potato, these are super healthy and all natural. They’ll make a great special snack when Lucy is behaving especially well.

And finally, from one of our favorite local dog treat companies, we got Bocce’s Bakery’s Green Juice treats! These are the perfect treat for Lucy, who has allergies to certain proteins. Made exclusively from spinach, kale, apple, spirulina, flax seeds and mint, these snacks are right up our alley!

What’s In My…Bugsy’s Box?!

2 May

About a month ago, we received a very nice email from one of the folks at Bugsy’s Box asking if we would like to write a review for them, a la our monthly feature, “What’s In My BarkBox?” They offered to send us one free box in exchange for an honest review, on our blog, of their service. So here it is, folks! When our box first arrived, I was sort of stunned by its size – it was BIG!

Bugsy's Box

Bugsy’s Box

Quite the offering, and we were excited to open this baby up to see what was inside. I don’t know if you can see, but there’s Lucy, off the left in the picture, sitting, waiting patiently. She was this close to photobombing this shot.

When we opened up the box, we discovered how nicely packaged it was – it’s clear that Bugsy takes pride in his product! On top was a card describing the overall concept of Bugsy’s Box and then a short description of each individual product included in that month’s box.

I wonder if Bugsy knew that orange is Lucy’s favorite color.

We were pleasantly surprised by the number of items in the box! Count ’em: 8! The first two items from the box are from Exclusively Pet, Inc. Two packages of treats that even Lucy can have as they’re made with zero common allergens! Natural (and kosher!), these treats are yummy for dogs, and safe for most of them!

Next up is a product we’ve already received once before: Pet Qwerks‘ Incredibubbles. We didn’t “get it” then and we don’t “get it” now. There’s no where really functional for us city dwellers to use a product like this, and though we can see it being fun for the pups, we can’t put it into practice very easily.

Pet Qwerks' Incredibubbles

Next up, another product we’ve already got in our inventory, if you will. YumZies by Nootie come in an array of flavors, and we’ve already gotten the BBQ Chicken (which is what came in our Bugsy’s Box) and the Peanut Butter flavors. Unfortunately, chicken is Lucy’s number one allergen, so these treats will have to go into storage with the others for one of Bully Project‘s dogs in need.

Item number four is one of the ultimate toys for Lucy: a toughie with a squeaker inside! Petlou‘s 9″ Animal Safari toy. Tough stitching in the nylon fabric makes this toy a bit more longer lasting than most, and the squeaker is crucial for Lucy’s enjoyment.

Petlou's 9" Animal Safari Toy

Next up is another squeaker toy, one that I don’t have as much hope of lasting nearly as long as Petlou’s. From Multipet, we got the Original Loofa Light! The benefit of these toys, however, is the lack of stuffing, so there’s minimal mess as the toy loses its insides. The downfall is that the destruction happens much more quickly.

Here’s something every urban dog owner needs: doggie waste bags! These ones, though, from Eco Dog Planet are not only helpful for us humans, but good for the planet too!

And finally, from American Dog Toys, we got a Fetch & Glow Ball! This is a pretty cool toy, for the ball obsessed dog. Being in the city, we will have trouble using it, since the dog parks close at a certain time and we can’t just go out in the backyard and play a late night game of fetch. But hopefully one day we’ll be able to take advantage of this fun ball!

So what are our thoughts, overall, on Bugsy’s Box? Well, it’s great! Lots of products, some fun stuff, but generally speaking: it’s about the same as the other subscription box services out there (yes, there are more than just BarkBox and Bugsy’s Box out there). With more products, of course, comes a slightly higher price point, but if you want more each month, it’s the way to go. The one thing I will say is that, from perusing their website, Bugsy’s Box does not have any easy way to support animal rescue so that’s one thing I would add to the program in order to remain competitive with other services.

Hi Everyone! Lucy Here!

Today is my dad’s birthday! I made him a cake, but then I ate it. So then I thought I could give him a nice, big bully stick, but he’d know that I’d regifted it to him, and that would be tacky! So, what did I end up getting my dad for his birthday?

Well, I got him the hottest new spa treatment: a Canine Saliva Facial! It’s supposed to be great for your pores, whatever those are! I think he liked it a lot. Dad did say that his wish for his birthday is that my foster brother John gets adopted – so everyone cross your fingers for that!

What do all you other doggies get your people for their birthdays?!

What’s In My BarkBox?

April 2013 BarkBox

April 2013 BarkBox

This is our biggest BarkBox yet, literally! When the package arrived, we were shocked at the size and weight of it. I was certain there was an Acadia Antler inside, but that was not the case. We weren’t disappointed though, because what we did find inside made us very happy!

Multipet Nuts for Knots Rope Toy

Multipet Nuts for Knots Rope Toy

Well, the packaging on this toy says it all, doesn’t it? “Pets just wanna have fun!” And that’s exactly what Lucy is doing with this Multipet Nuts for Knots Rope Toy.

Lucy with Multipet's Nuts for Knots Rope Toy

Lucy with Multipet’s Nuts for Knots Rope Toy

When Lucy first came into my life, we got some rope toys at our local shop, thinking they would be great for tug, and general tossing around, which they certainly were. But Lucy shredded them within a day, and I felt that they were just a waste of money. Well, this giant version, combined with a more mature, less destructive Lucy, is a great match!

Etta Says Duck Jerky Treats

Etta Says Duck Jerky Treats

Etta Says Crunchy Duck Chew

Etta Says Cunchy Duck Chew

Every BarkBox, as we’ve learned, comes with some sort of “noms,” inside. This month, we got great duck treats from Etta Says, including their jerky and crunchy chew. These duck treats are the perfect thing for my little Lucy: they wont incite an allergic reaction, and they’re high value and yummy enough to make her work for them!

Barkworthies' Stuffed Shin Bone

Barkworthies’ Stuffed Shin Bone

In the “noms” category, we also got a stuffed shin bone from Barkworthies! What’s it stuffed with, you ask? Ground up bully sticks! A favorite treat of many a dog, this bone chew will keep any dog busy for quite a while! And once the stuffing is gone, the bone can be restuffed with anything you like.

ABO Gear's GroomMitts

ABO Gear’s GroomMitts

In the grooming realm, we got ABO Gear’s GroomMitts! So, if I haven’t shared this tidbit about Lucy before, here it is now: she hates baths. She turns into a cowering, screaming, frightened maniac. Sometimes she screams so loudly it sounds like my apartment has been inhabited by a banshee. As a result of this, we avoid baths like the plague. Of course, she needs them every once in a while, and we deal with it. But these GroomMitts are a great solution to keeping her cleanish and smelling nice in between our not-so-frequent baths.

Licks for Dogs Joint & Heart Formula

Licks for Dogs Joint & Heart Formula

Licks for Dogs are vitamin supplements that integrate seamlessly with your dog’s food or water. We got two packets of their joint & heart formula, which are great for larger breed dogs like Lucy. The combination of omega-3 fatty acids, glucosamine and vitamin E are great to help support healthy development so that they can stave off arthritis for just a little bit longer, as it’s so common for the big pups. At $36 for a 30 day supply (1 packet every two days for dogs between 25 and 50 lbs), it’s pretty pricey, so I don’t think we’ll be able to continue with it at the moment, but it’s certainly something to think about is Lucy continues to age.

Letters from Lucy

2 Apr

Hi everyone! Lucy here!

I know it’s been a long time since my last letter. Dad kept saying something about this shiny silver thing he uses to write the bloggy and that he didn’t want me to scratch it up with my paw-nails too soon. But I’m back! And I’ve got a confession to make: I don’t like snuggling. Well, at least, I didn’t like snuggling.

You see, whenever Dad and I are sitting on my the couch together, or laying in my our bed, I like to be as close to him as I can get. I prefer if some part of my body is touching his, just so that I know he’s there and he’s okay. But the second he puts his hand or arm on me: no no no! Something about that makes me uncomfortable and I have to get up and walk away. Sort of like in this picture from Dad’s friend’s bloggy Love and a Six-Foot Leash:

See, if Dad puts his hand or arm on me like this dude has his arm on Little Zee, I just get up and walk away. Of course, once I’ve relaxed again, I will go back over to Dad and curl up next to him. But no snuggles! Until the other night: we were getting ready to fall asleep, and I was curled up against Dad’s tummy, and even though he knows I don’t like it, he put his arm on me, and I stayed! For the first time ever, Dad and I really snuggled, and it was sort of nice. (He didn’t get a picture of it though because he didn’t want to ruin the moment.)

Are there any other doggies out there who don’t like snuggling too much like me?

March 2013 BarkBox

This month’s BarkBox was pretty great overall, with one little clunker thrown in there. But overall, again, we’re very happy with the goodies we received! First discovery is something we’ve gotten in the past from BarkBox, but were thrilled to get again! Lollycadoodle makes great wool felt toys for pets, and for some reason, of the plushy-type of toys, these have always been Lucy’s favorite.

Clearly, Lucy enjoyed it very, very much. So much so that she completely disregarded her antler!

Next up, we got another toy from Harry Barker: a 7″ solid green hemp bone, that I’m sure Lucy will get a thrill out of, once she’s done mangling her mouse.

Next up is the clunker of the box: a dog waste bag holder from Angie’s List. Sorry to be a downer on this one, but this is purely promotional material. We all know Angie’s List, and we all know it’s not a pet specific company. I feel like this item was put in here to help widen their net of users, since they don’t advertise that they provide resources and reviews for dog owners. Well, I’ve already got a dog waste bag holder, and I’ve already got all the pet service providers that I need and trust, so sorry BarkBox and Angie’s List, this one was a miss.

Pet360 included a $10 off coupon for an order of $49 or more + free shipping. Pretty great – saves me some money and a trip to the pet store to buy dog food. Thanks Pet360!

And lastly, we got a couple bags of treats! Feelgood Treat Company included their chicken flavored Trail Blazin’ Bitz, which, as you all know, we can’t give to Lucy because of her allergies. But these are going to be a surefire hit with Bully Project‘s John!

Feelgood Treat Company's Chicken Flavored Trail Blazin' Bitz

We also got Little Eatz Perfect Peanut Butter cookies: “The treat you BOTH can eat!” Ok, so I sort of geeked out over this one, as it’s super clever. But, I really don’t like sharing the food I eat with Lucy, mostly because I don’t want to teach her that she is allowed to beg at the table while I’m eating. So even though this idea is super cool, these are going to be Lucy-specific treats anyway.
